How to choose a coffee tamper size

Match a tamper to the exact filter basket. Check the recommended base diameter, model and supplied parts before choosing a coffee tool.

Which tamper size should you buy?

Choose the base diameter recommended for the exact filter basket you use. Identify the basket model as well as the espresso machine: a replacement basket can change the fit even when the machine stays the same. Compare the recommendation with the selected tamper’s published diameter before ordering.

Does a 58 mm basket always need a 58 mm tamper?

A nominal basket size is a starting point, not a universal fit guarantee. For example, Decent recommends a 58.35 mm base for its baskets and cautions against a very close 58.5 mm fit. That recommendation belongs to Decent’s basket design; it does not establish the right size for every basket described as 58 mm.

Use the basket maker’s specification or written compatibility advice for your model. If that information is missing, ask the supplier to confirm the basket and tamper combination rather than selecting from the machine brand alone.

Which product details should you compare?

Record the tamper’s base diameter, base shape, handle and any stated adjustment or calibration features. Check the basket’s intended dose and the manufacturer’s instructions for the preparation method. A photograph cannot establish a precise diameter or an included mechanism.

For a replacement tamper, keep the basket model and current tamper dimensions together in the enquiry. State which published detail is still missing so it can be resolved before purchase.

What should your quotation confirm?

Specify the exact tamper model and supplied parts, including whether a stand or mat is included or separately priced. Ask for confirmation of the proposed basket fit. Keep colour or handle-finish choices separate from the diameter requirement.

The Keystonne TP-5 listing can be used to check its own published specification. Its presence in this guide is not a compatibility claim for the Decent example or for your machine.
